Shon Grabbe received his Ph.D. in theoretical atomic physics from Kansas State University in 1997. He is currently a research scientist in NASA's Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL) in the Intelligent Systems Division (TI) at NASA Ames Research Center.

Since graduation, Shon has been responsible for conducting, supporting and leading research activities in the areas of air traffic management and more recently quantum computing. He has over 70 conference and journal publications in the fields of atomic physics, air traffic management and quantum computing. Shon was named an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics from 2013-2019. Additionally, he is the co-inventor of a U.S. Patent entitled, “Air Traffic Management Evaluation Tool.” Shon received NASA’s Software of the Year Award in 2006, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Software Engineering Award in 2009, and the Government Invention of the Year Award in 2010.

His current research interests are in the application of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices to combinatorial optimization problems relevant to NASA.
