Piloted Simulation Evaluation of Tactical Flight Management System with Onboard Maneuvering Envelope Estimation a Success

On July 28, 2014, a successful commercial piloted shakedown test of technologies to improve aircraft safety was conducted in the Advanced Concepts Flight Simulator at the Crew-Vehicle Systems Research Facility. The completion of this activity marks the successful integration of advanced methods for onboard maneuvering envelope estimation, trajectory prediction, and predictive alerting in preparation for a piloted simulation study during the month of August. During the post-test briefing, the pilots indicated that all of the new technologies added value to their situational awareness under challenging (but realistic) test scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate tactical trajectory prediction and maneuverability envelope estimation technologies (and corresponding predictive alerts) when operating in off-nominal conditions. This experiment focused on the descent phase of flight, where the goal is to safely fly an aircraft under high-energy, low-energy, and impaired conditions from the bottom portion of the descent to landing (or terminating after completion of a go-around maneuver). The technologies evaluated in this experiment are intended to promote better crew situational awareness and energy management; all in an effort to address specific growing trends in loss of Airplane State Awareness, which have been identified as goals to address in an international study organized by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST).
