Advanced Caution and Warning System Android Tablet Application Demonstrated During Orion EFT-1 Flight

A prototype crew-oriented minimal Advanced Caution And Warning System (ACAWS) interface (Android application) was demonstrated to Orion Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1) crew and flight controller representatives as a user-research platform for a Failure Advisor module that will be integrated into the ACAWS health management system. We received constructive feedback for additional capabilities for the software, including failure analysis options and how to group and label data in ways that are readily understood by flight controllers. We also gained valuable insights into the factors that must be considered by the Failure Advisor, such as with the failure analysis decision process, timing and pacing of the decision process, how single vs. multiple failures are handled, and the type of rationale and coordination that is shared with the team prior to taking action. This user research bolstered a product that will help crew and flight controllers effectively accomplish their goals.

BACKGROUND: The Spacecraft Autonomous Fault Evaluation and Management (SAFEM) task is developing capabilities to support next-generation mission control operations and enable autonomous spacecraft operations. Toward that end, we are developing a Failure Advisor module that will be integrated into the ACAWS health management system to advise crew on whether there is margin to consult with ground controllers about a failure(s), or if they must take action independently due to the importance of mission activities or timing constraints.

NASA PROGRAM FUNDING: Autonomous Systems (AS) project, Game Changing Development (GCD) program, Space Technologies Mission Directorate (STMD). Access to ACAWS-knowledgeable crew and flight controllers was provided through the ACAWS demonstration task of the Autonomous Mission Operations (AMO) project (Advanced Exploration Systems program, Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate)
