Nikunj Oza and Guillaume Brat Present at Bilateral NASA - Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute Meeting in Moscow

Delegations from the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD, led by Associate Administrator Jaiwon Shin) and Russia’s Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) held a bilateral Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) focused on aviation safety in Moscow from April 5-7, 2017. This meeting included presentations by Guillaume Brat: “The Impact of Advanced Software Technologies on Aviation Safety”; and Nikunj Oza: “Anomaly and Precursor Identification through Mining of Flight and Surveillance Data”. A follow-up teleconference was held on May 31 to discuss initial plans for further TIMs, specifically within the topics of data mining (led by Nikunj Oza) and engine icing (led by Renato “Ron” Colantonio of NASA Glenn Research Center).

BACKGROUND: Jaiwon Shin (NASA Associate Administrator for ARMD) and Sergey Chernyshev (Director General of TsAGI) coordinated a Russian-American seminar on aviation safety. This included presentations from NASA and TsAGI scientists on information technology, environmental factors, aeronautics equipment, and their impacts on flight safety. The visit included discussions with Russian representatives of several American aeronautics companies and a visit to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology’s Department of Aeromechanics and Flight Engineering, where Jaiwon Shin presented an overview of NASA’s ARMD. More information can be found in the NASA press release, “NASA and Russia Hold a Seminar on Aviation Safety”.
