Intelligent Systems Division Researchers Volunteer at Synopsys Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair

Nhan Nguyen, Chetan Kulkarni, and Marcus Johnson served on the judging team for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Intelligent Systems (IS) Award for the Synopsys Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA) on March 23, 2017. The AIAA IS Award recognizes the project that best embodies the following criteria:

  • Relation to intelligent systems, as defined by the Intelligent Systems Technical Committee
  • Sound display of scientific method, scientific merit, and quality of research
  • Novelty and impact
  • Applicability to the aerospace domain
The AIAA IS Award was awarded to two first-place projects. Three other projects received Honorable Mentions. Winning students were awarded certificates and a NASA Ames Tour.

BACKGROUND: The SCVSEFA designs the Synopsys Championship to stimulate interest in science and technology for 6th-12th grade students from public, private and parochial schools. The philosophy behind the Fair is simple — students learn science by doing science. The SCVSEFA provides a forum for students to present their scientific work and to interact with scientists and receive feedback on their efforts. Students are awarded scholarships, cash prizes, and other non-monetary recognition for outstanding work. Winners from the Synopsys Championship are awarded trips to the California State Science Fair and the affiliated Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). This year, the Awards Ceremony will take place on April 9th at the Campbell Heritage Theater.
