Safe Autonomous Flight Environment For Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Team To Receive NASA Group Achievement Award

The Safe Autonomous Flight Environment (SAFE50) for small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) Team will receive a NASA Group Achievement Award. This is one of the most prestigious awards a group can receive, and is presented to selected groups who have distinguished themselves by making outstanding contributions to the NASA mission. The award will be presented at Ames' annual NASA Honor Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Auditorium.

BACKGROUND: The most difficult phase of sUAS deployment is autonomous operations below 50 feet in urban landscapes. Understanding the feasibility of safely flying sUAS autonomously below 50 feet is a game changer for many civilian applications. The SAFE50 project works to improve the use of sUAS and impact positively the economic growth of this promising potential by developing techniques to improve wind estimation and accommodation, real-time trajectory planning via characterization of obstacles using LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR), and onboard information fusion for real-time decision-making and safe trajectory generation.
