QuAIL Team Conducts Educational Outreach With the Colorado School of Mines

On April 27, 2022, members of the Quantum Artificial Intelligence (QuAIL) team conducted a virtual education outreach event with students in the Industry Exploration course at the Colorado School of Mines. The goal of this course is to offer a venue where students can learn about different computer science-related careers.

During the panel session, students had the opportunity to learn about the QuAIL team's extensive experience in the field of Quantum Information Science (QIS) in a range of areas, such as fundamental physics insights in the co-design of quantum hardware, novel physics-inspired classical solvers and simulators, quantum tools and programming, quantum algorithms, quantum-enhanced NASA applications, and quantum communication and networks.

BACKGROUND: At Colorado School of Mines, the Department of Computer Science has a course called Industry Exploration (IndEx). The goal of this course is to offer a venue where students can become familiar with different computer science careers and companies by 1) doing some pre-visit work on a specific company, 2) spending time with that company, and 3) writing a reflection on the visit. Companies that participate in IndEx meet with a small group of students and provide an overview of what the company does, share details on jobs for tech employees at the company (and requirements to get those jobs), allow time to interact with employees (e.g., Q&A), help students get a sense of culture, and generally discuss opportunities in a specific career.

NASA PROGRAM FUNDING: NASA Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) Program; and funding received through interagency agreements with the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy; the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS) and Co-Design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA), National Quantum Information Science Research Centers; and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
