Peter Robinson Serves on NESC Review Board For Orion GNC Fault Detection, Isolation, & Recovery System

Technology Insertion Projects Group member Peter Robinson attended the Orion Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) at Johnson Space Center (JSC) November 17-19 as a member of the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) Review Board. The TIM provided the initial necessary background information to Robinson and all Review Board members to perform the required breadth and depth survey of the Orion GNC FDIR materials.

The Orion GNC FDIR is partitioned into five independent sensor systems that support identification of attitude and position of the spacecraft. The interaction of the five sensor systems together and with the rest of the Orion FDIR programs is a key focus of analysis. Another analysis focus is requirements traceability to test campaigns. The final report will be completed by late January 2016.

BACKGROUND: Under the leadership of Neil Denehey (HQ), Dr. Lorraine Fesq (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratroy), and Scott Starin (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), the NESC has been asked by the Orion program to perform an independent review of the Orion GNC FDIR design. There will be a parallel review by the Software Architecture Review Board to examine Orion’s Simulink models. Results from the assessment are expected in January.
