Nikunz Oza Gives Overview of Data Sciences Work at High-Performance Computing Forum

Nikunj Oza, the Intelligent Systems Division Data Sciences Group Lead, was invited to give an overview of NASA Data Sciences work at the High Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from September 5-7, 2017. The talk gave a broad overview of NASA work in data sciences, data mining, machine learning, and related areas for application to all NASA Directorates (Aeronautics Research, Science, Space Technology, Human Exploration and Operations Missions), including how HPC is used within the work. The talk described the roles of NASA, academia, and industry in advancing machine learning to help solve NASA problems.

BACKGROUND: The HPC User Forum was established in 1999 to promote the health of the global HPC industry and address issues common to HPC users. The organization has 150 members and is directed by a volunteer Steering Committee of users from government, industry, and academia. Rupak Biswas, Ames Director of Exploration Technology (Code T), is the Vice Chairman of the Steering Committee. Attendees were from government, industry, and academia and ranged in expertise from HPC to disciplines making use of HPC, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and physics-based modeling.

NASA PROGRAM FUNDING: Shadow-Mode Assessment using Realistic Technologies for the National Airspace System (SMART-NAS) project, Aviation Operations and Safety Program (AOSP), Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD)
