Dr. Wendy Okolo Presents on Urban Air Mobility Safety at the 2021 Business of Automated Mobility Forum

System-Wide Safety (SWS) project Associate Project Manager Dr. Wendy Okolo presented “Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the National AirSpace (NAS): Safety Above All” at the 2021 Business of Automated Mobility (BAM ) Forum: Flight Path to UAM/Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) on November 3, 2021. Watched by 630 forum attendees, the virtual presentation provided an overview of SWS and its overall mission. Dr. Okolo explained the ongoing work to develop the In-time System-wide Safety Assurance (ISSA) Services, Functions, and Capabilities (SFCs) that form the building blocks of an envisioned In-time Aviation Safety Monitoring System (IASMS). The presentation concluded with a look to potential future safety implications as the use of the NAS expands with UAM and AAM.

BACKGROUND: SWS focuses on exploring, discovering, and understanding the impact on safety from technical advancements in aviation and any associated emerging operations. SWS supports the transformation of the NAS and contributes to the safe integration of emerging, unpiloted aircraft in urban and rural environments.

The 2021 BAM Forum was a two-day, online-only event with 630 attendees. Topics of interest to industry and government leaders, including unmanned aircraft system traffic management, safety and security, and remote pilot technology and autonomy, were addressed throughout the forum.
