A reference textbook entitled “ Model-Reference Adaptive Control - a Primer” authored by Nhan Nguyen has been published by the Springer Publishing Company on March 8, 2018. The 453-page textbook, eBook ISBN 978-3-319-56393-0, is a new addition to Springer Advanced Textbooks in Control and Signal Processing

BACKGROUND: Adaptive control is a fundamental enabling technology for autonomous systems, capable of modifying control policies to achieve performance objectives by a system identification or machine-learning process. Examples of adaptive control aerospace systems are numerous and include real-time adaptive-drag optimization control for fixed-wing aircraft and adaptive-augmenting control for the NASA Space Launch System (SLS). Adaptive control was a research element under the NASA Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) project from 2006-10. Applications of adaptive control are being developed for the NASA Advanced Air Transport Technologies (AATT) project for flight control of flexible aircraft.

This textbook is developed from a series of lecture notes for graduate courses taught by Nhan Nguyen at Santa Clara University. The textbook provides a foundation in model-reference adaptive control with basic well-accepted adaptive control techniques. It also includes new material on optimal-control modification adaptive control technology developed at NASA Ames and flight validated on NASA F-18 aircraft in 2010-11. Numerous adaptive flight control applications can be found in the textbook.
