International Space Orchestra Performs at the Iconic Hollywood Bowl

The International Space Orchestra (ISO), the world’s first orchestra of space scientists, performed at the iconic Hollywood Bowl on September 24th. The ISO opened for the sold-out concert of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, firing up 17,000 concertgoers by performing four fan-favorite Sigur Rós songs. After performing on the world-famous stage, several members of the ISO deployed to five locations around the Hollywood Bowl to spread the word about NASA in an outreach event called “Talk to me, I’m a Space Viking”, in which ISO members spoke about their work and answered questions from the crowd. This unique and innovative outreach activity communicated NASA work to new audiences. The ISO with Sigur Rós were photographed before their set.

BACKGROUND: The International Space Orchestra, founded and directed by award-winning designer of experiences Nelly Ben Hayoun, is at the forefront of innovation in the field of space science outreach. By proposing an experiential practice to the field of education and outreach, it is actively framing new ways to engage the public with space and science education. The musical director is two-time Grammy award winner, violinist and composer, Evan Price. The assistant musical director, arranger and conductor for the Hollywood Bowl concert, is Gordon Lustig. The ISO musicians are from NASA Ames Research Center, the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, the Singularity University, and the International Space University.
