Intelligent Long Endurance Observing System Project Receives Funding

The Intelligent Long Endurance Observing System (ILEOS) project proposal has been selected for funding by the Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) program within the Science Mission Directorate’s Earth Science Division.

BACKGROUND: The ILEOS project aims to develop a science activity planning system that will target High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to obtain high spatio-temporal climate-relevant data by leveraging and fusing coarse-grained sensor data from satellites and other sources. ILEOS will 1) reduce the cost for greenhouse gas observations in environments ranging from the arctic to urban areas to offshore areas (some previously inaccessible), 2) enable continuous observations not possible for current field/in-situ campaigns, and 3) improve science and health outcomes.

ILEOS was submitted in response to the ROSES-2021 Advanced Information Systems Technology solicitation for New Observing Strategies (NOS). Proposals were submitted from across NASA, as well as academia and industry. ILEOS was one of 28 projects selected for two-year funding with the potential for a third-year extension.
