FAA-NASA Telecon Explores Potential Collaboration on Aviation Ontologies

NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) discussed their respective activities in the area of ontologies and aviation data management in a joint teleconference on March 14, 2017. The FAA reported on a system to support regulatory compliance for aviation safety using an ontology to facilitate document browsing and search; NASA reported on the Air Traffic Management (ATM) Ontology, designed to support ATM data integration, query, and search. Natesh Manikoth, FAA Chief Data Officer, expressed his interest in publishing these ontologies via open sourcing to simulate global collaboration and partnership with industry, standards bodies, academia, and other Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), especially EUROCONTROL. Also discussed were possible joint FAA-NASA projects that would leverage existing efforts and engage industry and government in collaborative partnerships to evolve the ontologies.

BACKGROUND: In January 2017, Natesh Manikoth met with Parimal Kopardekar, Ames Senior Engineer for Air Transportation Systems, and John Cavolowsky, Program Director for Airspace Operations and Safety, to discuss areas of mutual interest between NASA and the FAA. In that discussion, data management and ontologies came up as one of the FAA’s interests. Natesh Manikoth took an action to set up a meeting to discuss collaboration possibilities.
