Diagnostics & Prognostics Group Members Mentor Students in NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars Program

Diagnostic & Prognostic Research Group members Edward Balaban, George Gorospe, Dr. Chetan Kulkarni, and Dr. Wendy Okolo mentored students and judged robotic competitions in support of the NASA community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program. Over 40 students from six states participated in the NCAS program at the NASA Ames Conference Center from February 20th-23rd. George Gorospe and Dr. Chetan Kulkarni each mentored one of four student teams, introducing the students to NASA system engineering principles and strategies for technical problem-solving. Additionally, mentors reviewed the students’ resumes and suggested edits to highlight skills and qualities required for interns at NASA. Students participated in two Mars rover-like robotic challenges judged by Edward Balaban and Dr. Wendy Okolo, who also provided advice for students seeking NASA-related careers.

BACKGROUND: NCAS is an educational program designed to provide community college students with an authentic NASA experience while encouraging them to complete their two-year degrees, transfer to four-year programs, and pursue NASA-related careers or fields of study. During the four-day experience, students engaged in a NASA robotics challenge involving teamwork, critical thinking, planning, and project management. Students also met with program alumni who are currently working for NASA or NASA contractors. This is the third time Ames has hosted this program.
