Ames Intelligent Systems Division Renews CMMI Maturity Level 2 Rating

The Intelligent Systems Division successfully completed a SCAMPI A benchmark appraisal and renewed its Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Maturity Level (ML) 2 rating for another three years. The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) is the official CMMI Institute method to provide benchmark-quality ratings relative to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) models. SCAMPI appraisals are used to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement of current processes, reveal development/acquisition risks, and determine Capability and Maturity Level ratings. The Division was first rated at CMMI ML2 in 2010 and the rating was successfully maintained in 2013 and 2016. The 2019 appraisal was a collaborative effort involving personnel from Codes TI, RE (Engineering Systems Division), QS (System Safety and Mission Assurance Division), and ACE (the Ames Office of the Chief Engineer).

BACKGROUND: CMMI is a process model for software and systems engineering first established by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and is currently administered by the CMMI Institute, a subsidiary of the Information Systems Audit and Control Organization (ISACA). CMMI is similar to ISO 9001, AS9100, and other international and industry standards. NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) 7150.2 for Software Engineering require all organizations developing Class B software to have a CMMI ML2 rating. This rating means that the organization has satisfactorily met all the specific and generic goals defined in CMMI in the areas of Project Planning, Requirements Management, Project Monitoring and Control, Configuration Management, Measurement and Analysis, Supplier Agreement Management, and Product and Process Quality Assurance.
