The AEKN Group develops information management technologies for integrating and accessing high-throughput, heterogeneous data sources and knowledge representations. The AEKN Group performs research and development along with operational system support on advanced search and data synthesis of enterprise information systems and knowledge management.
Constellation Information Systems and Data Architecture
This set of coordinated projects, tasks, and products will create systems, processes, and plans that support the flow of information, software, and data to and from CxP stakeholders in support of systems engineering and integration and various reconfiguration processes. The underlying vision is to develop a common information architecture for acquiring, validating, managing, producing, and distributing compatible sets of software or data. This will enable information interoperability through the definition of standards for information exchange and the development of general-purpose and domain-specific registries. Within the overall vision and architecture, smaller teams are working to develop tools that enable the sharing of software and data products, whereas Constellation Level-2 management provides guidance in establishing processes and plans that support adaptive and efficient information flow.
The Digital Shuttle Project is a knowledge management system for a virtual space shuttle orbiter, using intelligent Engineering Objects (EOs) and immersive 3D graphics. The EOs are knowledge collections of entities within the orbiter, including legacy data, engineering data, and 3D graphics models. Using immersive displays covering visual, aural, and tactile input and output, observers will be able to access and interact with the EOs. A hierarchical component architecture will enable external processes, such as payload package simulations, to interact with the Digital Shuttle knowledge base.
Mishap Investigation Research
This project will demonstrate a prototype mishap knowledge management system that will make case examples and trend analyses of mishaps more accessible to NASA personnel. This project will also study certain mission practices where such a knowledge management system might have a particularly beneficial impact.
Object-Relational database management system (ORDBMS) is an integrated hybrid cooperative approach to combine the best practices of both the relational model utilizing SQL queries and the object-oriented, semantic paradigm for supporting complex data creation. NETMARK provides an extensible, clientless, schema-less, information-on-demand framework for managing, storing, and retrieving unstructured or semi-structured documents. It was originally developed in early 2000 as a prototype to handle the vast amounts of unstructured and semi-structured documents within NASA enterprises. NETMARK takes advantage of the object-relational database model using very efficient keyword searches spanning both content and context.
Performance Data Analysis Reporting System
This project demonstrates a proof-of-concept for system-wide infrastructure to aid in the projection of effects and provide decision support when Courses-of-Action (CoA) and assessments in the National Airspace System are needed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The objective is to significantly augment FAA decision services by making RADAR TRACON information accessible, as well as other information components for fast-time distributed analysis for decision-making across the U.S. continental FAA centers and Air Route Traffic Control Centers.
Project Mangament Tool
The Program Management Tool (PMT) is a comprehensive, web-enabled business intelligence application tool used to assist NASA enterprises in monitoring, disseminating, and tracking the progress of program and project milestones, their line-of-business processes, and their corresponding resources, such as personnel, task plans, monthly reports, and budgetary allocations. The tool is aimed at providing strategic Center and program management (PM) information to stakeholders and decision-makers. The tool is also intended to facilitate ease of use, track accountability, and ultimately improve communication between various NASA enterprises and end-users. The PMT tool is designed to be flexible and extensible by seamlessly integrating with current and next-generation strategic information systems.
