Intelligent Systems Division Researchers volunteered at the Synopsis Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair (SCVSEFA) on March 13, 2013. Anupa Bajwa was a member of the Castro Family Prize judging team to select the top ten projects from 80 physical science projects presented by eighth grade students. The top project is awarded a prepaid trip to the California State Science Fair. The others are under consideration for CSSF participation.
Jose Benavides, Nhan Nguyen, and Kristin Y. Rozier (head judge) served on the judging team for the AIAA Intelligent Systems Award. The AIAA IS award recognizes the project that best embodies the following criteria: relation to intelligent systems, as defined by the Intelligent Systems Technical Committee; sound display of scientific method, scientific merit, and quality of research; novelty and impact; and applicability to the aerospace domain The AIAA IS Award was awarded to two first-place projects; those students are awarded programmable robots, AIAA student memberships, and certificates. Three other projects received Honorable Mentions, AIAA student memberships, and certificates.
BACKGROUND: The SCVSEFA designs the Synopsys Championship to stimulate interest in science and technology for 6th–12th grade students from public, private, and parochial schools. The philosophy behind the Fair is simple-- students learn science by doing science. NASA has benefited directly from Synopsys; for example multiple talented student interns have been recruited from this venue in the past. The SCVSEFA provides a forum for students to present their scientific work, interact with scientists and receive feedback on their efforts. Students are awarded scholarships, cash prizes, and other non-monetary recognition for outstanding work. Winners from the Synopsys Championship are awarded trips to the California State Science Fair and the affiliated Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
