The Global Connection Project has released a North America overlay for Google Earth that incorporates National Geographic media. By enabling "National Geographic layers," users of Google Earth can view hyperlinked content simply by clicking the yellow rectangle icons, each of which is geo-referenced to National Geographic stories and images. The North America release builds upon the success of Global Connection's Africa overlay (September 2005), which also contained geo-referenced National Geographic content, as well as aerial imagery from Mike Fay's Megaflyover project.
Global Connection is a partnership between the NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group, Carnegie Mellon University, the National Geographic Society, and Google, Inc. The project seeks to spread understanding of the world's environments and peoples on a global scale. Global Connection is embedding aerial imagery and hypermedia content into Google Earth. The resulting high-definition spatial imagery can be used for a wide range of applications including education, science, and disaster response.
