Bill Clancey presented an overview of Mars Exploration Rover science operations to 62 high school students participating in LeadAmerica’s Engineering and Robotics Conference at Stanford University on July 20th, 2010. The presentation explained how scientists have been doing field science on Mars through a form of “virtual presence” afforded by a robotic laboratory, integrated visualization-planning tools, and daily commanding.
BACKGROUND: LeadAmerica is a youth leadership organization whose mission is to “inspire and empower our young people to achieve their full potential and instill in them a sense of purpose, integrity, self-confidence, and personal responsibility.” The Engineering and Robotics program presents an overview through a variety of learning formats: traditional college-style lectures, small group challenge activities, and experiential learning. Presentations by subject matter experts (professors and local entrepreneurs and professionals) enlighten students of their experiences and engineering careers.
