Dr. Terry Fong has won a Silver Snoopy award for outstanding and sustained contributions over the last ten years in innovating and pushing the boundaries of how intelligent robotics can enhance and support the operational capabilities of human spaceflight. The Silver Snoopy is a special honor awarded to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success.
BACKGROUND: Dr. Fong currently serves as the Group Lead for the Intelligent Robotics Group, which spans the fields of computer vision, geospatial data systems, human-robot interaction, interactive 3D visualization, and robot software architecture. Under Dr. Fong’s leadership, the successfully validated Smart Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experiment Satellites (SPHERES) has opened a path to a future in which free-flying (and other) robots will regularly perform routine maintenance, as well as tedious and dangerous tasks, so that astronauts can carry out more productive work.
