The EXoplanetary Circumstellar Environments and Disk Explorer (EXCEDE) proposal was recently selected for technology development funding under the SMD Explorer program. This funding will provide further development of the instrument to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) in order to enable this mission to observe dust disks and understand planetary formation around other stars.
BACKGROUND: The EXoplanetary Circumstellar Environments and Disk Explorer (EXCEDE) proposal is a joint effort between Ames, the University of Arizona, and Lockheed Martin. It was developed in response to the Explorer 2011 Announcement of Opportunity. ARC’s role in this mission was primarily to develop the instrument technology in the Code S Coronagraph Lab and to build and operate the Mission Operations and Ground Systems in Code TI. This mission will be led by Principal Investigator Glenn Schneider from the University of Arizona.
